I continue to be amazed at those who finish their Christmas shopping by the end of October, or even earlier
for some.  On the one hand, I envy their organization and just the fact that it is a task completed. But after
only a moment or two, I think of the many years my husband I have shopped all day, from store opening to
store closing, to find just the right gift for everyone. Back in those days he was lucky to have one full day
off.  So the pressure was on.   It was a challenge, but we had a lot of fun.  The city of Wilmington was
Christmas everwhere with decoration, music, and the many, many shoppers.  You know, we probably could
have finished our shopping in less time if we had not stopped so often to visit with friends and family who were
also out shopping. 

We have more time and opportunity for shopping now, and we visit the Chapel Hill and Raleigh NC area for a
portion of the shopping, but we always land in Wilmington for the bulk of the task. Our new strategy is to divide
the task into smaller portions so that we can enjoy the city on numerous occasions.

We also enjoy the shops and stores in Southport, Shallotte, Leland, and the
Brunswick County beach and island communities. In small towns in Brunswick
County and in the city of Wilmington NC, everything is better during the Christmas
Season.  As a child I thought it was about the receiving of gifts. But as I think
most adults do, I realized soon that it is the giving that is so rewarding. With time
to reflect on years past, I now feel that at least a part of the magic and good will
comes from the process.
 

North Carolina features golf courses from the mountains to the coast.  Visit Pinehurst to find golf and more
activities and interesting things to do, and find Boiling Spring Lakes, St. James Plantation, and Winding River
Plantation as well as many additional courses in Brunswick County and the Wilmington and New Hanover
County areas on the coast.   Also ask about golf in the Brunswick Forest community in Leland, North Carolina.

 Spring in North Carolina means different things to different people.  To me spring means planting herbs, tomatoes,
cucumbers, and of course a variety of flowers.  Red petunias, yellow and orange marigolds, and daises in a variety
of colors are a few of my favorites.To the fishermen ( and fisherwomen ) in our family spring means good fishing
and warm, lazy days on the Lockwood Folly River.  To the golfers, spring is all about golf.  The Southport - Oak
Island Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament has become a tradition. The grandfathers, uncles, and cousins
play golf all day, while the grandmothers, aunts, and grandchildren enjoy the beach, parks, and general Brunswick
County outdoors. Of course the men come home from the golf tournament exhaused and in need of immediate
sustenance and either praise or consolation, depending on the quality of their play. Either way, we all enjoy the
evening meal and making plans for the next day's coastal adventures. 

Some of these herbs aren't looking so good.  Seems they need to be fed. The weather is getting warmer.  Let's see
what food, rain, and sunshine do for them. Golf week-end is approaching fast. Our golfers are getting in a little
practice and we are all hoping for good weather.
If you enjoy fishing the waters of Brunswick County and coastal North Carolina, you will be glad to know that the NC 
Wildlife Boat Ramp at Sunset Harbor opened in early July.  Sunset Harbor is bordered by the Intracoastal Waterway
and the Lockwood Folly River.  If you are ready to move to the NC coast or just  looking for a  vacation place, ask 
about homes onLockwood Court in River Run Plantation and properties in Rourk Landing Estates and the River Walk
community.  If you plan to build a home, see Magellan Boulevard, and ask about more lots and homes for sale in the
Sunset Harbor area and Oak Island, NC real estate and building sites.

After a couple of months layoff due to a health issue which resolved without any long term complications,
I decided it was time to hit the links again.  I was able to rejoin the foursome which includes my brother
and a couple of friends.  We are all four roughly 18 handicappers and our game is usually "skins with
carryover" for a nerve testing 25 cents and a thousand dollars worth of  pride per hole.  You would be
amazed at the trash talking that goes on after one of our rounds.   We chose to play Carolina National at
Winding River Plantation.  This isa beautiful and well manicured course with several holes on the serene
Lockwood Folly River. Green fees were very reasonable ($30), and we were able to get a 7:20 AM tee time
which enabled us to avoid the mid-day heat and return home in plenty of time to watch the British Open. 

Unfortunately, I was not able to do much boasting about my round after shooting a 95 and having to fork
out $3 to cover my losses, but I feel quite confident that things will be different the next time we meet.

Winding River Plantation and the Carolina National Golf Course are located in the Bolivia area of Brunswick

Our favorite day in the Asheville areawas the day we spent at Biltmore Estate. The house is beautiful,
and the history of the house and the estate is quite interesting and worth the day of walking, reading,
and listening.  If you live in the Asheville area and plan to relocate to the NC coast, see bungalows,
condos, and homes in Southport, ask about cottages, beach houses, and Holden Beach real estate,
and view Sunset Harbor, and Bolivia, NC homes for sale.

With summer well underway, it is time for a shopping trip to Charlotte and Mecklenburg County or perhaps to the
Raleigh and Cary area. -- not on the same day of course.  Both of these North Carolina metro areas offer excellent
shopping as well as plenty of cultural locations and events and a nice variety in dining.  We wouldn't trade our laid
back beach and coastal lifestyle, but we do enjoy a trip to the metro areas of the state from time to time.  If you
live in Charlotte or the Cary and Raleigh area and plan to spend some time at the beach, see the beach and the
Atlantic Ocean on Oak Island and Caswell Beach, visit the Ingram Planetarium at Sunset Beach, and find golf,
sailing, and much more on the islands and beaches of Brunswick County, North Carolina. See bungalows, homes,
and more Southport real estate, shops and businesses on or near the Cape Fear River, and the NC Maritime
Museum.

favorites among visitors, but the ocean, beaches, and waterway always get their fair share of time from everyone. Many
visitors and vacationers rent oceanfront and beach area cottages and houses as well as the hotels and inns in the
Brunswick County and Wilmington areas.  If you are thinking of investing in a  property at the beach, stay over a day or
two before heading back to  Raleigh and  view Oak Island real estate or homes on Ocean Isle Beach.
