Autumn in Southport, Oak Island, and the Brunswick County area of coastal North Carolina is one of our favorite seasons.
We enjoy the cooler weather and a slowing down of activities after the busy summer. Fishing and just a day out on the water is probably our favorite autumn pastime.
And of course, if we happen to catch fish or other seafood, we are even more pleased with our time spent on the rivers, lakes, ocean, or Intracoastal Waterway. Our favorite fishing spots are Davis Canal on Oak Island and the Lockwood Folly River in the Sunset Harbor and Winding River Plantation areas. We ususally try our luck in the Mullet Creek area and had good luck on Saturday in Mill Creek. The weather was perfect and the fish were biting. Nothing beats a day on the river ending with a plate of fried fish and grits.

Southport, Oak Island, and all of the county beaches offer fishing and boating opportunities. The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament out of Southport is held in October and draws a large and enthusiastic group of those who fish and those who support them.
The Landing at Varnamtown is also a well known fishing area in the county. You'll see shrimp boats and the houses where they unload the catch as well as gorgeous views of the river and marshes.

By no means have we forgotton the golfers. The weather this time of year is also perfect for an all day golfing event. There are many courses to choose from in Brunswick County in St. James Plantation, the Caswell Beach and Oak Island area, and Boiling Spring Lakes.
