Our Heuristic Peregrination or .. the day we went to Bladen County
Early, early in the morning, we set out on an expedition through the countryside of a coastal and southeastern NC area to see how things have changed, or ... stayed the same. We found some of both. We particularly enjoyed seeing the farms and various crops. The main crop we saw was lots and lots of corn fields. This of course brought back memories as both of us lived on farms as children.
We drove on to Columbus County and Whiteville where we snapped a photo of the Courthouse and the Railroad Depot. There are newer businesses and shopping centers in Whiteville now, but we find the older downtown area especially charming.
After a cup of coffee and a breakfast biscuit, we drove on to Bladen County and Elizabethtown. Again, the downtown area reminded us of the small towns in Brunswick and Horry Counties in years past. We stopped to take a picture of the Bladen County Courthouse here, and drove on to White Lake.
We walked out on the dock at White Lake to enjoy the view of the lake, but as it was very early in the morning, we only encountered one person and one duck. We snapped a couple of photos that turned out badly, with a big smudge in the middle of each. I think an inadvertent application of sun screen to the lens of the camera may have been the problem. Being the optomistic pair that we are, however, we see that as a reason for a return trip to White Lake.
See more NC rivers in Leland, Shallotte, and the Sunset Harbor and Holden Beach area.
On our trip back, we stopped at the wildlife ramp on the Cape Fear River in Elizabethtown for a couple of photographs of the river. Having lived in Southport on the mouth of the Cape Fear for decades, I am always interested in seeing the river in other areas. In the pictures below, you can contrast the expansiveness of the bay in Southport to the trees and forest framing the river in Elizabethtown. I also like to imagine what life was like way, way back when the river was the primary means of transporting goods and cargo.
The photograph above is of the Cape Fear River in the Port City of Wilmington.
Well, what did we learn on our little journey? We learned that farms are thriving and corn seems to be a popular crop, the Cape Fear is different but also beautiful in Bladen County, and the countryside and rural areas of North Carolina are as interesting and beautiful as ever.
How does that old saying go? " You can take the boy ( girl ) out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy ( girl ). "
A visit to the river and a seafood lunch is another favorite afternoon drive.
