A southport, NC Christmas, Holly Berries, and Davis Canal

We certainly cannot pack all of our Carolina Christmas Memories
into this one page.   We would, however, like to wander just a bit
through some of our favorites.

A few days after Thanksgiving about  twenty years ago, my husband, two teenage sons, and I made
the twenty minute drive to Sunset Harbor where we launched our jon boat into the Intracoastal.  The
weather could not have been nicer that day.   The air was warm, the water was calm, and the sky was
especially blue with only a few small white clouds floating far above reminding  us that it was indeed
winter.  It must have been just after the spot fishing season as we didn't encounter many boaters or
fishermen that morning.

The photograph to the left was made at
 the public boat ramp in
Sunset Harbor.  This is where
 the Lockwood Folly River and
the Intracoastal Waterway converge.

Our mission on this particular day was to gather holly and cedar
branches for  decorating  our Southport  home for the Christmas
Holidays.

As there was much work ahead and these two teenagers ate like
lumberjacks, I  packed a  huge lunch of sandwiches,  fried chicken,
chips,  apples, cookies, and probably some food items I can't think
of right this minute.

My husband steered the boat around the curve and headed into the
Davis Canal, a natural canal that runs about half way up Oak Island.

We cruised until we came to a small island that lies between
Davis Canal and a wide expanse of marsh. This long, narrow
strip of land and the residential lots across the canal abounded
with holly trees, pine trees, scrub oaks and cedars.   As some
of the trees on our lot grew very close to the water's edge with
branches hanging over, my husband and the boys were able to
lop plenty of branches without leaving the boat.

The boys kept piling the branches into the boat long after I told them repeatedly that we had
plenty.  You know how that goes, the enthusiasm of youth.  When we started back up the
canal for home, the mound of evergreens was so high you could hardly tell there were people
in the boat.

As it turned out, the enthusiasm of youth became the generosity of adults as we had plenty
of holly, cedar and magnolia, gathered from another location, to share with our neighbors.

The boys had done all that they had plans or aptitude for in regards to Christmas decorating and
spent the rest of the afternoon shooting hoops with their friends in our driveway. My husband, a
few neighbors, and I sorted the winter greenery and divied it up among the  group of us  with stops
at each house  for decorating suggestions and ideas, coffee, cocoa, cookies, and other Christmas
culinary treats.  What started out as a quick trip to Davis Canal for holly berries turned into a long
day, quite an adventure, a neighborhood event and, best of all, a great Christmas Memory.
