Spring is very close by  ... in coastal North Carolina.

The azaleas and camilas will be blooming soon as well as the wisteria and
more flowers, shurbs, and trees in Southport, Brunswick County, and the
carolina coast area. Fishing will be good again, the golf courses and parks
will be warmer and more inviting, and the vegetable gardens will provide long
awaited dining treasures.
The city of Wilmington in New Hanover County is
planning for the North Carolina Azalea Festival in April, and you'll find
an
abundance of trees and azaleas in a stroll through the streets and parks in
the riverfront town of
Southport.

In conveying to people how wonderful Southport is, I
think the best thing I can say is that it was a beautiful
and special place to live in 1971 and the changes that
have occurred throughout the years have served to
protect and /or improve what  was already an excellent
and unique place to live, work and play.

I  relocated from Horry County, SC ( which joins Brunswick
County, NC ) to findsignificant differences in the culture and
customs of the adjoining counties.

The picture above was made in a community in the Sunset Harbor area.

Southport had been a small  fishing  village for many, many years and
was now adjusting to the hundreds of people who were here to build the
power plant. The town wasgrowing and my small family was growing with
it. The plant was completed and  went online in 1976.  Most of the people

who had come to work, many of whom had become our good friends,
moved on to the next project.

We were a small  fishing village again with a few residents who
had discovered  Southport as a  perfect retirement  destination
and a few vacationers who came from the Oak Island towns of
Long  Beach, Yaupon Beach, and Caswell Beach to enjoy our
restaurants and shops.

With another bridge to Oak Island planned for the near  future, I am reminded
of the event in 1971  that brought  us the  Oak Island Bridge that currently
connects  the island to the  mainland.   A barge hit the draw bridge rendering
it inoperable.  The news spread quickly.  When my husband got home from work
we  jumped into the car and drove down to the waterway to see the damaged
bridge.  That was big news and a significant event.  I think everyone in Southport
went to stare in amazement at the ruined bridge and wonder how the residents
of the island would manage.  The population of the island was small but there
were some permanent residents.   All of their travel to and from the island was
by boat for many months while the new bridge was being built.

The draw bridge was replaced with a high rise bridge
that still serves us well.  Of course, we look  forward
to another bridge as many  additional folks now call
the Oak Island area home.

A little about the Lockwood Folly River,
fishing, cruising, and the Maiden Voyage ...

Time on the  Lockwood Folly River and  Bay is one of our
favorite ways to spend an afternoon ...  or a day.  Fishing,
clamming, and oystering as well as cruising and enjoying
the weather and scenery are major  components of  " the
good life "in coastal North Carolina.

We put our used, but new to us, jon boat in the water today.  It didn't sink.
We consider that a  successful trip.   We made an  attempt at fishing,
but holding seat cushions  on our heads  for protection  from the rain was
something of an impediment to the exercise of baiting hooks and casting.

Of course, there is usually more than one way to look at things. If
we had caught  fish while wearing seat cushions on  our heads, we
would have known without question that the seat cushion ritual was
the  very thing  responsible for our success  and therefore would be
doomed  to a life  of fishing  with seat  cushioned heads and certain
ridicule from the general fishing community.

Our favorite fish from  the Lockwood Folly River and Bay are flounder, red
drum,  speckled  trout,  spots, and croakers.   We also enjoy clams and
oysters from these local waters.  In fact, I remember well
my introduction
to Brunswick County oysters
.
